Andy Bradley 2020
My career as an audio engineer spans 46 years on the road and in studios. It includes Australia, the Philippines, and the USA. My first studio in Houston was ACA Recording (on West Park drive) from June 1980 to October 1984. 1982 was the beginning of my career as Chief Audio Engineer for the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. My second stint in Houston was the famous SugarHill Recording studios from October 1984 to January 2015. Working for two different owners (Huey P. Meaux and Modern Music Ventures) then led me to forming a company (RAD Audio) that bought it in 1996. SugarHill was officially sold Christmas of 2017 and RAD Audio was dissolved. Near the end of my tenure at SugarHill, I formed my own production company (Andy Bradley Productions) and now I’m a free-lance recording engineer/record producer working primarily at Wire Road Studios. May 31st, 2019 signified my retirement from the Shepherd School after 37 years.
Thanks to the legendary record producer, Huey. P. Meaux who owned SugarHill when I took over as chief recording engineer in 1984, I learned about its amazing history. Thanks to meeting people like Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet), Kris Kristopherson, Benny Barnes, Jim Olivier, Jerry Lee Lewis, Freddy Fender, Johnny Bush and others, my interest in the history of the studio kicked into gear. The result is a book about the 79-year-old recording facility known as SugarHill, called “House of Hits” co-written with noted author Professor Roger Wood.
I have been a voting member on the Texas Board of NARAS (The Grammy’s) for nearly 30 years. Two of my projects have been nominated for a Grammy. Working with 6 time winning producer, Judy Sherman and 3 time winning producer, Blanton Alspaugh has brought me into contact with amazing musicians, composers and conductors. One of my nominations came with Blanton and the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and another came with Judy and the Chiara String Quartet.
For the last 20 years the International Festival at Round Top Texas is one of my favorite recording ‘homes’. I have recorded CDs, DVDs and archive recordings for the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Kingwood Chorale, Kingwood Big Band, Chamber Music Houston, Context-Houston, Musiqa, Mercury Baroque, Houston Chamber Choir, and Aperio-America. Many of my concert recordings have been broadcast on American Public Media and on Houston classical radio station, KUHF. My ‘pop’ recordings have been broadcast all over the world and on local station KPFT.
To date my career features nearly 1200 commercial releases (Vinyl LPs, 45rpms, Cassettes, CDs, DVDs, and digital downloads). In my 39 years here in Houston I recorded over a thousand demos and 3000 concerts for broadcast or archive. The many local and national artists include: Tab Benoit, Calvin Owens, Bert Wills, Rene Fleming, Itzak Pearlman, Radio Birdman, Deniz Tek, The Hitmen D.T.K., Smashmouth, Jandek, Destiny’s Child, Bubbha Thomas, Kenny Cordray, Paul English, Trudy Lynn, Evelyn Rubio, Archie Bell, Grady Gaines, Arnett Cobb, Roy Head, Mickey Gilley, Johnny Bush, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Chris Gardner, Freddy Fender, Champion Sisters, Zach Tate Band, The No Refund Band and many more.
